POLICE officers will be swapping their uniforms and stab vests for rugby

POLICE officers will be swapping their uniforms and stab vests for rugby shirts ready for a bruising semi-final battle with the Scots.

The West Mercia Police team will take on Police Scotland at the Police Sports UK Rugby Shield Semi-Final on Wednesday, April 19.

Police may be more used to tackling crime than each other - but that will all change in the game which sees officers, some from Worcester, take on the Scots (Police Scotland Saltires RFC) at Droitwich RFC at 7pm.

Supporters are welcome to attend and cheer on the force team with the match coming hot on the heels of West Mercia's gruelling win away against the Welsh side as the team powers towards what they hope will be a place in the final.

DI Dave Knight, based at Worcester Police Station in Castle Street, said:

"The West Mercia team have been managed by T/ Chief Insp Dave King with my support for the past six years. We have over 60 members who work across the West Mercia Police area, and we all find the rugby really helps to balance the negative aspects of our work and brings us together for something positive.

"We are grateful to Bromsgrove RFC who continue to host us for our home games. Wednesday's game was difficult for Bromsgrove and so we are thankful that Droitwich RFC have agreed to host what should be an entertaining game."

He added: "We are playing off the back of a tough win away at Wrexham against North Wales and are hoping to reach the final at Stourbridge against Cheshire or Northamptonshire Police."
