An Upstate driver who was hit by a piece of a tractor-trailer that crashed into a wall on I-85, has died, officials said Thursday.

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the crash happened on Oct. 26 a little after 10:30 a.m. on I-85 at mile marker 83, two miles north of Cowpens.

Ridgeway said a tractor-trailer driver, 33, from Columbia, was heading north when it traveled off the road to the right and hit a concrete wall.

The force of the crash dislodged the semi's axle, sending it flying into the southbound lanes, Ridgeway said.

He said the axle hit a 2013 Toyota Sedan being driven by a 49-year-old from Marietta, Georgia.

The Toyota driver was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where the driver died Thursday at 3 a.m., Ridgeway said.

The coroner has not yet released the driver's name.

Ridgeway said the tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
