NSW freight network strengthened by $2B investment

A new toll-free motorway to connect freight to the future Western Sydney

A new toll-free motorway to connect freight to the future Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport has reached a major construction milestone.

The new 16-kilometre road is a $2 billion investment in Western Sydney being funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments.

The M12 Motorway is expected to carry 52,000 vehicles per day by 2036, with connectivity via Elizabeth Drive to the east and The Northern Road to the west.

The central section between Cecil Park and Badgerys Creek is being delivered by Seymour Whyte, while the western section to the Northern Road is being delivered by the joint venture of CPB and Georgiou.

Senator for NSW, Tony Sheldon, said the route will cater to the transport industry's needs.

"This project will see connectivity and road linkages match the facility and demand of the Western Sydney International Airport's passenger and freight transport requirements," he said.

"This road expands the benefits of the Western Sydney International Airport beyond the airport itself to better link with Western Sydney communities."

NSW Roads Minister, John Graham, said it was exciting to see construction underway.

"To understand why this road is essential to the success of the new airport you need to remember it will take more than a quarter of an hour off the journey if you were to use the existing road network which is primarily Elizabeth Drive," he said.

"It has also been built to accommodate future freight movements and growing economic zones such as the Aerotropolis and employment zones stretching from Liverpool to Erskine Park and beyond."

Major construction on the M12 Motorway will be complete prior to the opening of the new Western Sydney International Airport in 2026.

In other news, critical work will be undertaken to bolster a key bridge in Tasmania's metropolitan road network as the first stage of the Freight Capacity Upgrade Program gets underway.
