Netherlands: Lingering train disruptions likely after system malfunction prompts suspension of rail service to and from Amsterdam Centraal June 4

Significant train service disruptions are likely in the Amsterdam Metropolitan

Significant train service disruptions are likely in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area over the coming hours after a system malfunction prompted authorities to suspend rail service to and from Amsterdam Centraal station on the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) system June 4. NS has reported that no trains are operating between Amsterdam Centraal and Zaandam, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), Weesp, and Haarlem; additionally, no international trains are running to or from Amsterdam Centraal. Train services between Utrecht and Veenendaal and between Leiden and The Hague have also experienced disruptions due to the system failure. Authorities have estimated that the malfunction and consequent suspension of service will last until around 20:30.

Authorities may modify the estimated service restoration time on short notice. Residual train disruptions are likely across the system even after NS restores train service as it works to clear any passenger backlog. Heightened demand for taxis, the Amsterdam Metro, and other modes of transportation is likely over the coming hours and will probably cause increased traffic congestion as well as crowding on public transportation systems.

Consider using alternative modes of transportation for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to likely heightened demand for alternative transportation and consequent congestion. Heed all instructions issued by local authorities.
