Motorcyclist Killed After Crash With Tanker Truck in Deerfield Beach

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash Friday morning

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash Friday morning between a motorcycle and a tanker truck that closed a major intersection in Deerfield Beach.

BSO officials said the crash took place just after 6:30 a.m. on Sep. 2, and the male driver of the motorcycle died at the scene. Traffic homicide detectives identified the victim as 30-year-old Joao Paulo Carvalho.

The on-scene investigation revealed Carvalho was driving his motorcycle westbound on Southwest 10th Street approaching the intersection of Southwest 12th Avenue.

At the same time, a man named Sergio Bessa was driving a semi-tractor-trailer tanker eastbound on Southwest 10th Street and stopped in the designated left turn lane to proceed north onto Southwest 12th Avenue.

Bessa turned across the westbound lanes into the path of the motorcycle, according to the report. The motorcycle struck the passenger side front tandem axle of the tractor-trailer in a T-bone-type crash.

BSO says the motorcycle came to a final rest within the intersection at the area of the collision while the tractor-trailer came to a controlled stop a short distance away.
