German trailer maker Fliegl has developed an electro-hydraulic steering system

German trailer maker Fliegl has developed an electro-hydraulic steering system that no longer requires coupling rods to be linked to the tractor.

The so-called SteerX setup instead relies on load-sensing hydraulics, a sensor on the trailer axle and an Isobus connection.

If the latter isn't possible then the company can provide a separate cable harness and display.

These provide data on the driving speed and inclination, thus allowing the system to calculate the necessary steering angle and engage the hydraulic cylinder accordingly.

In practice, this should help reduce the lateral forces caused when cornering, which can be detrimental to tyre and axle longevity.

That's particularly the case with tandem and monster triple-axle trailers, with their long wheelbases making them particularly awkward to manoeuvre.

And unlike a conventional mechanical-hydraulic setup, the steering angle is not limited by the connecting rods or master cylinder.
